Abilene Zoological Gardens
The Abilene Zoological is a small 16-acre zoo located in Abilene, Texas. The zoo has over 1,000 animals representing over 250 species. Attendance for 2013 was 224,000. Abilene zoo has been an accredited member of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums since 1985.The zoo participates in the Reciprocal Admissions Program, allowing members to obtain free or reduced admissions at many other American zoos. The zoo is primarily funded by the City of Abilene and the Abilene Zoological Society.






Wildlife Carousel

Take a whirl on the wild side! Tokens are available for $2 in the Zoo Store until 4 p.m. Children younger than two can ride free with a paying adult, and children need to be 42 inches tall to ride the merry-go-round alone.

Kilimanjaro Mining Sluice

Young miners will discover fossils and gemstones as they pan in this old-fashioned sluice. Buy a bag of “rough” at the mining shack. Cost is $8 for pay dirt, $9 for fossil finds, and $11 for Lucky Strike bags.

Safari Express Train

Train tokens are available for purchase in the Zoo Store from 9 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. and can be redeemed at the train station until 4 p.m.. $2/person, 2 years of age and under FREE. Schedule subject to change due to weather and/or animal needs.






The Watering Hole

Enjoy a refreshing beverage and a hot dog or hamburger basket, popcorn, cotton candy or nachos!

Nelson Lake Paddleboat Excursions

Take some time during your zoo visit to enjoy cruising Nelson Lake aboard a swan paddleboat! Each bird holds two adults and one child. Half-hour rentals are $4 per person. Children 3 to 12 years old must be accompanied by an adult, and all participants must sign a liability waiver form. A parent or guardian must sign for minors. Swan boat rentals available from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. daily. Due to weather issues, wind and lightning, boat rentals may be forced to close without notice.

Zoo Lake Feeding Frenzy

Feed the huge carp and other hungry fish in Zoo Lake. Fish food available for purchase right by the dock.






Zoo Store

Shop for fun T-shirts, hard-to-find plush animals, toys, gifts, and keepsakes. Guests even can take care of business like booking a zoo rental, buying a membership, or scheduling a birthday party. While you’re there, it will be hard to resist freshly baked cookies with iced coffee.

Wagon Rental

These are available at the front gate. Rent yours when you get admission.

Birthday Parties

Looking for a birthday party that is positively Wild? The Abilene Zoo offers birthday party packages! Birthday parties are offered most Saturdays at 10 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. and most Sundays at 1:30 p.m. Our birthday parties are recommended for children turning at least 4 years old.
