Description
The Central Park Zoo is located in Central Park in New York City. It is part of an integrated system of four zoos and the New York Aquarium managed by the Wildlife Conservation Society and is accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums. The zoo began in the 1860s as a menagerie, and thus making it the first official zoo to open in New York. The zoo was modified in 1934, with the addition of many new buildings ranged in a quadrangle around the sea lion pool. The zoo is home to an indoor rain forest, a chilled penguin house and a previously unoccupied polar bear pool now occupied by a pair of grizzly bear siblings. It also coordinates breeding programs for some endangered species: tamarin monkeys, Wyoming toads, thick-billed parrots and red pandas.
Whisk off to Asia for a visit with snow monkeys, red pandas, and cranes. While the monkeys surprisingly love the water, we often find the red pandas in the trees. Agile climbers, they use their long, bushy tails for balance.
Penguins and puffins are a nice respite from the hustle and bustle.“Loved the penguins’ enclosure and how close they swim up to the glass to say hi.”
Home to potbellied pigs, sheep, goats, and plenty of opportunities for young visitors to crawl, jump, climb, and pretend to be animals, the Children’s Zoo always brings out the child in us. Not to mention, it has the only cow in Manhattan.
It’s impressive to watch these magnificent big cats navigate steep terrain with such grace. In the wild, they are known to jump 20 to 30 feet when chasing speedy prey.
There’s a startling variety of animals here, from the forest floor to the canopy, including an engaging troop of black-and-white ruffed lemurs. Listen close. The species is known to employ a variety of calls to communicate.
An immersive experience featuring the visual drama of a 3-D film with a variety of built-in sensory effects. It’s quite an adventure. Please note: this experience is geared for children ages 6 and up, and is not recommended for children under age 4.
Sea lions are curious and intelligent. Our training/feeding sessions help stimulate them. In the fall, the animals may eat more than usual. They’re building up insulation for the cold weather.
Rest and re-fuel at the Dancing Crane Cafe! We’re committed to providing Zoo guests and Central Park visitors with a wide variety of high-quality meals, snacks, beverages, and desserts that include carefully prepared fresh and healthy choices.
