Description
Carowinds is a 398-acre (161 ha) amusement park, located adjacent to Interstate 77 on the border between North and South Carolina, in Charlotte and Fort Mill, respectively. The park opened on March 31, 1973, at a cost of $70 million. This was the result of a four-year planning period spearheaded by Charlotte businessman Earl Patterson Hall, who was inspired to build the park by a 1956 trip to Disneyland and a dream of bringing the two states closer together. Owned and operated by Cedar Fair, Carowinds also features a 20-acre (81,000 m2) water park, Carolina Harbor, which is included with park admission. The park has a Halloween event called SCarowinds.
One of the park’s original and signature attractions, Carolina Skytower features an air-conditioned cabin that travels up a 262 foot tower. As the tower rotates, guests will get a panoramic view of both North and South Carolina and the entire park. Don’t miss out on this one-of-a-kind family experience!
Inspired by racing legend Dale Earnhardt, Intimidator is one of the tallest, fastest and longest coasters in the Southeast. Complete with a Winner’s Circle, Victory Lane, Wall of Fame tribute to Dale and a replica of the famous No. 3 Monte Carlo, this mega coaster is full of speed and airtime.Riders begin with an intimidating 232-foot hill and plunge at a 74-degree angle and experience racing speeds up to 80 mph. Riders then catch some major airtime on the second hill, which is 178-feet – significantly taller than most first drops. Followed by another series of hills, twists and turns, riders will see where the ride earns its name as they race for the checkered flag.
A staple of any County Fair, the Rock ‘N’ Roller is a fast-paced circular ride that will rock n’ roll you around and around, up and down as high-energy tunes and spectacular lighting complement this awesome experience.
Nighthawk is the closest thing you’ll get to flying without growing wings! Soar through the Carolina skies and over the water as you dive, dip and twist through a daring adventure. The Carolina’s first flying coaster begins with a tension building climb and is followed by an intense ride that features eight inversions, most while flying face down – zooming toward the ground and turning skyward just in time for the next inversion. The unique rider position offers breathtaking and virtually unobstructed views of the park.
Plants vs. Zombies™ Garden Warfare 3Z Arena is the world’s first intra-active 3-D attraction. After entering a state-of-the-art arena and picking a team – plants or zombies – guests are immersed within the Plants vs. Zombies Garden Warfare 2 universe in an epic battle to find the golden gnome. Packed with astonishing effects and zany action, players compete for high scores and bragging rights.
The new attraction, exclusive to Carowinds, is based off the Plants vs. Zombies Garden Warfare franchise – a hilarious and over-the-top shooter videogame series that drops you into a crazy, all-out battle between plants and zombies in their fight for suburbia. Players are able to join the battle with new characters including Super Brainz, a zombie super hero who thinks he’s an 80’s action movie star, and Citron, a bounty-hunting orange from the future.
Built in 1923, the Character Carousel is the oldest ride at Carowinds. Riders get to choose from 68 hand-carved wooden horses and a couple of chariot seats before they embark on a whimsical journey located at the heart of Planet Snoopy. Among the many leaping horses is the lead horse, who can be distinguished by his golden hooves.
This new six-story tall water slide complex features three attractions (six exhilarating slides). Pirate’s Plank will send guests plummeting down a nearly vertical free fall where the floor drops out from underneath. Captain’s Curse will twist and turn riders through an enclosed chute with four intense 360-degree turns. And Cannonball Drop shoots guests down a series of intense drops and turns.
Need a place for the family to soak up some fun? Big kids and little kids alike will love Seaside Splashworks. This multi-level play structure features over 80 play elements, including dozens of interactive spray jets, water guns, adventuresome net bridges, awesome water wheels, six impressive water slides and a giant 423-gallon tipping bucket that drenches everyone below. It’s the perfect mixture of adventure, relaxation and entertainment.
