Description
It is recognized as a leading zoo in animal management, research, conservation, and education. The zoo is accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums. The zoo initially held 51 deer and antelope, 11 buffaloes, a sacred cow, a sandhill crane, 20 prairie dogs, a dromedary camel, eagles, ducks, elk, foxes, geese, swans, rabbits, a raccoon, a China sheep, opossums, a buzzard, owls, peafowl, among other animals.
The rolling habitat at River’s Edge has several vantage points that let you gaze at the endangered black rhinos as they wallow in the mud under a small waterfall. The mud protects the rhino against the heat and insect bites. Black rhinos are very rare in the wild due to illegal hunting for its horn.
Painted dogs, also known as African wild dogs or Cape hunting dogs, are the largest African canid. These beautifully spotted, social pack animals are among the most endangered canids in the world.
The smallest carnivore of Africa is the dwarf mongoose, which prefers life in a termite mound. Agile and active, the mongooses run, jump and climb around their mound, sometimes with their diminutive offspring.
Finally, wander through a large bat cave to a 33,000-gallon Missouri River Aquarium with natives of the Missouri and Mississippi Rivers including gar, bluegill and whiskered catfish.
he Insectarium is one of a handful of exhibits in North America dedicated solely to bugs. It hosts more than 20 major exhibit areas, with more than 100 species of live insects. These creatures are definitely underrated. You can learn about how hard working they really are — how they recycle waste, pollinate plants and support the entire cycle of life.
